Jane’s dad committed suicide in her senior year of high school. She and her sister needed help until the social security check from his death – began to come in. CSL was able to help the family with food and utility help. A local church partnered with CSL to provide extras like gift items for holidays and birthdays in this family. The family is grateful for the different kinds of help during their time of grief.

The following is a letter of thanks from Jane:

“I recently found myself in a situation of having to seek financial aid to pay my gas bill. I would like to thank you for your help and for putting me at ease in what was an embarrassing situation for me. Your kindness is very much appreciated – also the assistance CSL is offering the community is simply priceless.”

“Several times in the past few years you have been there when I needed help and again her you are. I just wanted to express my deepest thanks. In return I hope that I can do for someone else someday. For now, here’s a small winter clothes donation.”

“I just wanted to thank CSL and your staff so much for the job that you do.
My family and I have had a very long hard winter and it’s not over yet. But, because of your compassion and generosity we have had good and help with our electricity. I wanted you to know that the work CSL does is making a difference”.

“Thank you so much for CSL making my son and myself have a good Christmas. I really enjoyed everything and so did my son. I'm so glad I was able to provide for him. I couldn't have done it without CSL help.”

Dona, a senior citizen, had been receiving a small portion of her ex-husbands pension along with her SSI. When she stopped receiving the pension, her monthly income was cut almost in half. She was unable to pay her light bill and her electricity was in danger of being shut off. CSL helped her pay her past due bill so that she could be put on a level payment plan, making it a little easier to budget her reduced income. The caseworker also helped her fill out a food stamp application and volunteers are making
sure that she gets to our pantry every month.

Mary came to our Fairmount Office unemployed, broke, and overwhelmed. She met with our Work Express Coordinator, received job referrals to job openings, bus passes to interviews, and attire to wear to work once she was hired. Within a week, Mary was employed on her way back to self-sufficiency.

Independence Location

A young deaf woman recently gave birth at Truman Medical Center, but when the Truman Medical Center Nurse and Social Worker attempted to conduct the in-home follow up visit, the young mother didn't respond to their knocks on the door. Upon finding out that the young woman could not hear their knocks, the Truman Medical Center social worker contacted CSL because she knew CSL would do our best to find a way to help her. Caseworker Helen Holmes was able to secure a doorbell signaler for the deaf and provide assistance with how to install it in this young mother's home.
